DZ2's Den of Delights
Hi to all my loyal readers and those who enjoy my stories: The Den of Delights is open once more and, for this one, it's an interesting and unusual little response that I would best say goes with my 'Higher Power' Challenge, so see what you think;
Deus ex Magica
'I killed Sirius Black; I killed Sirius Black!'
The laughing cries of Bellatrix Lestrange echoed through the Ministry as she ran for one of the nearest exits, her laughter and mocking declaration, both of which were usually the stuff of nightmares, now only sought to enrage the vengeful spirit that gave chase after her. As the chased and the chaser reached the Atrium and the many different Floo Gates, Bellatrix's laughter had become an echoing cry of victory that taunted to her pursuer.
'You coming to get me? Are you going to get me?'
'CRUCIO!'
The snarl came so suddenly that Bellatrix half-expected it to be a failed attempt to use one of the worst curses in all of magic; and yet, as the painful curse struck the Lestrange witch, she didn't laugh at the attempt. She didn't laugh or jeer at the fact that her pursuer just couldn't get it done.
In fact, what she did do was scream and scream loud!
The curse, contrary to the opinion of the Lestrange mistress, didn't just hit her; it hit her hard, setting each and every one of her nerves on fire and leaving her unable to break free of the curse or any of its power. Instead, all that Bellatrix found that she could do was flail and scream while she vaguely noticed the figure standing over her, a victorious look in his emerald-green eyes as he stared at her.
'Am I going to get you?' asked Harry James Potter, pointing his wand right at Bellatrix while the curse continued to hurt her, 'Yes…I…am!'
Deus ex Magica
'You've got to mean it, Harry…'
Harry rotated his neck in pain as he felt the pressure mount within his mind, his eyes filled with rage and desperation as he looked down at Bellatrix Lestrange, the deranged witch almost begging for his mercy as she looked up at him.
'She deserves it…' hissed the dark voice, the source of the pressure within Harry's mind, 'She killed him!'
Harry could feel the desire growing within him: the voice, he knew that it spoke the truth; he knew that this was right, that this was just; but, at the same time, he felt like he couldn't do it.
He couldn't kill…not even to avenge Sirius' death.
'You're weak, Harry Potter,' sneered the dark voice, 'How many more lives will she destroy? How many more must die before you do what must be done? Before you realise who you really are?'
'I'm not a murderer,' hissed Harry, his eyes fixed on Bellatrix as he snarled, 'I'll never be like him.'
'Then they will die,' hissed the dark voice, 'All of them, not just Sirius Black: all will fall because their hero was just too weak. And not just the men and women either, Harry; the babies, the children, the weak and the innocent.'
'Shut up…' growled Harry, 'Whoever you are, shut up!'
'They'll beg and she will laugh…'
'I said shut up…'
Harry could feel his hand trembling as he tried to focus on the good in him, the side of him that was the hero and not the villain, the good, not the bad.
'They'll all die and she'll feel only pleasure…and it will all be your fault!'
'No…'
'Just like they were your fault too…if only you had never been born, they might never have died!'
'NO!' Roared Harry and, before his good could stop it, his wand was raised, his eyes filled with a demented look as he snapped, 'Avada Kedavra!'
Bellatrix died screaming, her scream echoing through the halls like a banshee's wail; with the curse struck, Harry's hand trembled and, as he felt the adrenaline pass him away, Harry's eyes widened when he saw a faint white glow appear in front of him. From within the glow, a tall figure in a long black robe appeared, his pale-blue eyes filled with sorrow and a hint of inevitability as he looked at Harry.
'You!' snarled Harry, his eyes streaming tears of pain as he hissed, 'You made me do this!'
'To show you the truth, Harry Potter,' replied the man, his voice like the hiss of a serpent as he told Harry, 'All throughout your life, I have tried telling you that you were destined for more. At each and every Dark moment, I have been there to try and show you that this is who you are…who we are.'
'I am not a monster like you, Alpha!' hissed Harry, his green eyes filled with fire as he exclaimed, 'Why would you do this? If you're so benevolent, why wouldn't you help me? You did before!'
'Things that have been set in motion can never be undone except by the hand of he whom commands the force behind it,' replied Alpha, his eyes on Harry as he told him, 'Things are moving ahead, Harry: the power that you called upon has broken the Balance, but none more-so than Tom Riddle.'
Stepping across the floor, Alpha extended a hand to Harry before he told him, 'If you stay, they will condemn you and, in doing so, your actions will condemn the world. It is time to put aside the image of the boy-hero and become what you were born to be…one of us…one of…'
'The Avatars,' replied Harry, lifting his head to Alpha as he hissed, 'And because you need me, you trick me into killing her.'
'Would you have done any differently if you didn't have the will to do what must be done?' asked Alpha, earning a frown from Harry as he told him, 'This is who you are, Harry Potter: the living embodiment of neutrality…of utopian will and spirit. This is why we have been watching you and, now that you have crossed the line into greatness, it is time to elevate that power to…the next level.'
'As one of you,' growled Harry, pulling himself to his feet as he hissed, 'And what if I say no this time, huh? Are you going to make me kill again?'
'No,' replied Alpha, his eyes on Harry as he told him, 'We will simply kill you, Harry Potter: change the past and bring someone in with the will to do what must be done and never look back, unless that someone is you.'
Harry's eyes widened at Alpha's confession before he frowned again as he hissed, 'You are a bastard, Alpha…you and all Avatars!'
'It has been said,' replied Alpha, watching as Harry heaved a sigh before, closing his eyes, he spread his arms and addressed the figure once more;
'Do what you have to…it's not like I can go back: I accept your invitation.'
With a soft smile, Alpha lifted his hands before he told Harry, 'For what it is worth, Harry, I take no pleasure in this…but it is for…'
'The Greater Good,' finished Harry, 'Yeah: for what it's worth, Alpha, I hate the Greater Good!'
Then the lights shone and, as Harry felt the power hit him, he knew that his life would never be the same again;
Not now that he was an Avatar!
So, there we go then: like I said, a bit weird and unusual, but also fun because I considered the Avatars to be a worthy Higher Power that would want a spirit like Harry's as part of their team.
Anyway, for anyone wondering, here are the challenge details:
DZ2's 'The Higher Power' Challenge: An invitation from a quote-unquote guardian seeks to turn Harry into the next generation of defenders of good. Now faced with challenges and trials, it is time for Harry to accept the invitation
Rules: Light or Grey/Neutral Harry
Powerful Harry
If Harry accepts the invitation at Hogwarts, it must be sometime after 2nd year
If Harry accepts the invitation before Hogwarts, his guardian angel must get him away from the Dursleys
Soul Bond story
One member of the HP universe must sense Harry's potential and, following his acceptance, become an ally of his in his fights
Sirius becomes free and clear if/when the story reaches 3rd year
Guidelines: The Golden Trio stick together and the mentor trains them as a unit
Nice Severus
Non-Manipulative Dumbledore
A second prophecy tells of Harry's acceptance
If Harry is trained by Merlin or someone of that time, he inherits the right to the throne of magic
Slash
Crossovers: the figure can be a higher power from another fandom e.g. Gods, Spirits, Immortals etc.
Forbidden: Non-Powerful Harry
Harry ignoring the invite (at some point in his lifetime at Hogwarts, he accepts it if not before)
Dark Harry (even if the Higher Power is a Dark Witch/Wizard)
Bashing of the following characters: Neville/Luna/Draco/Hermione/Fred/George and any options you choose to take
Other than that, it's up to you...
If I wound up writing this one, it wouldn't be an ACTUAL Charmed Crossover; only the Avatars would be involved. I used them because I thought of that VERY annoying expression – the Greater Good – and they were the first beings to come to mind with it;
Anyway, next instalment in the Den coming soon…
